Our guest is Larry Winters, a psychotherapist, poet, author, playwright, veteran, and Ph.D. student at Wisdom University. He is the author of “The Making and Un-Making of a Marine” and the play “Nothing Means Nothing.” We’ll be joined by Scott Thompson, co-director of Veteran-Civilian Dialogue. Scott is a psychotherapist and Director of Social Dialogue and Training Initiatives at Intersections International, which is dedicated to promoting justice, reconciliation and peace across lines of faith, culture, ideology, race, class, national borders and other boundaries that divide humanity, and the sponsor of Veteran-Civilian Dialogue. Veterans And Civilians Break Silence, Help Each Other Heal

War doesn’t only touch the lives of those on the front lines -- it extends to all of us, whether we’re conscious of it or not. That’s what the Veteran-Civilian Dialogue aims to highlight by bringing together members of the two groups, which can often seem polarized, for the purpose of healing.

Afghanistan reminiscent of Vietnam, two veterans say

In his speech at West Point Tuesday, President Obama rejected the notion that his plan for further involvement in Afghanistan has any parallel to the Vietnam conflict.

But parallels abound for two New Paltz Vietnam vets; a third Vietnam vet says he sees parallels to the Iraq war.

New Paltz native Larry Winters joined the Marines out of high school and served in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970. He is also the author of "The Making and Un-Making of a Marine," an autobiography. While he thought the president did a good job of explaining the situation in Afghanistan, Winters doesn't like what he sees down the road.

"The strongest parallels I see between Afghanistan and Vietnam is the military leadership making the same kind of impossible-to-win decisions. The lives of U.S. soldiers are being spent on issues that are remote to our homeland."

Featured story from VietNow National Magazine, November 11, 2009

Some of us have taken an oath, swearing a solemn pledge, at one time or another. Those of us who have been in the military have all taken an oath that put our lives on the line for our country. But many Americans have never taken a serious oath of any kind, especially not an oath that pledges any kind of commitment to this country. Is it time now for a “Citizens Oath”?

"Breaking the Trance of Denial" by Anne Pyburn from Chronogram Magazine, January 27, 2009

Across eras and cultures, harsh lessons have been considered essential to manhood: physical discipline, emotional suppression, competition. Larry Winters learned well, becoming a United States Marine during the Vietnam War, when that notion of manhood was being widely (and often unkindly) questioned.

So Many Wars – So Little Learned
by Larry Winters • New Paltz, NY

“The wars we have fought since Vietnam, the ones we still fight today, suggest that we have not yet learned from our mistakes,” Larry Winters said to a church congregation this past March. He then read from a piece he called the Khe Sanh Address, a reference to the Gettysburg Address, written for the occasion as follows:

Two-front war

By Bonnie Langston, Freeman staff   05/03/2007

A memoir by New Paltz Vietnam War veteran Larry Winters has elicited a ticker-tape parade of sorts, a celebration neither he nor his comrades in the war experienced decades ago upon their return home.

The belated parade is a quiet one - a stream of readers perusing his "The Making and Un-Making of a Marine: One Man's Struggle for Forgiveness," the first published work by the New Paltz Millrock Writers Collective.

Poems of Pain Help Him Heal War's Trauma

"In the Spirit"  Feature article Times Herald-Record  Monday, March 19, 2007
by John Sullivan,   Times Herald-Record

Washingtonville — Before Larry Winters began his speech yesterday, he asked everyone to stand, one by one, and call out the names of people they know serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

So, one by one, several dozen Unitarian worshippers at St. Anne's Episcopal Church called out, about two dozen names in all, including one response from a young man with short-cropped hair.   "I know too many people to know just one," the man said.

So Winters, a licensed mental-health therapist, poet and author, began.   The silver-bearded and bespectacled New Paltz native spoke in a baritone voice that commanded, as his body shook.

The author of "The Making and Unmaking of a Marine: One Man's Struggle for Forgiveness" had never before spoken about his work before a large audience, he explained to the Times Herald-Record.

Inspiring Article
Congratulations to the Record for publishing the article about Larry Winters. I was personally inspired by what Winter said. Through his poems and his walking stick, he brings hope to all of us that it is feasible to stop the war.

If we truly love our nation, our men and women in harm's way, we have to pray like never before to ask God to end this senseless madness. I know that this is actually on everybody's heart. We need the courage to speak out. We need to pray for our country, and for the entire world. Let us take Winter's example that through writing poetry and producing art, we all can make a difference. Often the deepest longing in a person's heart is best expressed in the different arts.

Forgiveness is a power and not a weakness. I have tried to express this in various ways over the last 35 years. This is the only way to end all conflicts between nations and between people.

WINNING THE WAR WITHIN

By Jude Treder-Wolff

The devastating effects of war on a person's soul and mind are of particular urgency and resonance right now because of the current world situation with wars in Afghanistan and Iraq dragging on with no end in sight.

On his website ... Larry Winters, BPS, LMHC, includes a disturbing statistic from the last major war that has stark relevance to our country at this time. "As of today," he writes, "over 100,000 Viet Nam veterans have committed suicide. It does not take much foresight to project what society will look like ten to fifteen years from now if we don't address the men and women returning home. Homelessness, suicide, battering, and joblessness will become more rampant, costing society financially as well as emotionally."   ... [Full text of article]

Larry Winters,   Author of: The Making and Un-making of a Marine

What do we care about these days?  The amount of snow to shovel off the sidewalks?  Where we will go out to dinner next weekend?  Who we are not getting along with at work?  How much it will cost at the supermarket when we go shopping?  Do we want pepperoni or mushrooms on our pizza or the fact that the death count in Iraq is at 3,131 on February 18, 2007 and the causality list at 32,544, the US mill for making soldiers is in full swing? ...
